There are 3 main types of a music video and these are narrative, performance and abstract.
- Narrative can be used with nearly any genre. It is basically a song which tells a story at the same time and it is usually figurative.
- Performance is usually used in pop and rock genres. This is basically where they perform to the song, this could be the artist singing the lyrics.
- Abstract tends to be very detached from the video. It usually has unconnected images which go in time with the song and it suits most styles of music.
I have learnt about the 6 different types of conventions we would expect in a music video.
- Video and genre- This is where the genre will dictate the content and the look of the video. For example, Rock, we would expect, dark lighting, stage, dark clothes, etc..
- Lyrics and visuals- This is where there is a relationship between the lyrics and what we see match each other. This can be shown through
- Music and Visuals- This is the relationship between the video and the music. For example, instruments, this is the illustrative.
- The record label and artist- The record label demands a level of intimacy between the audience and the artist through the use of close ups etc... Furthermore, the artist will develop a style, or motif- which will be repeated in their other music videos.
- Voyeurism- This is where the artist looks into the camera, for example, at the audience. Also the female body is treated in a particularly voyeuristic manner.
- Intertextuality- This is the reference to other media forms, figures and texts.
